2020 Mosaic Film Festival

Throughout the weekend of November 20-22, the Mosaic Film Festival of Arts & Culture presented excellent programming of 30 films from 6 countries.

“Bone Cage” (Dir. Taylor Olson) won Best Feature, “Armenia(s), Time for Artists” (Dir. Anahit Dasseux Ter Mesropian & David Vital – Durand) won Best Documentary, “Whiteface” (Dir. Everett Sokol) won Best Short, “Disco Apocalypse” (Dir. Kevin Hartford) won Best Atlantic Short and “Thai Country Living” (Dir. Ben Tubby) won Best Sound and Original Music.

Synopsis: Using explosive movement and satirical humour, two indigenous performers tread the timeline of appropriation of Indigenous bodies, from cowboys to Coachella, exploring concepts of identity and colonization. Through movement, mask, and the subversion of the performance of Red Face, a history of social masks comes alive in this timely and impactful performance devised by Todd Houseman and Lady Vanessa Cardona.

Armenia(s), Time for Artists

Anahit Dasseux Ter Mesropian & David Vital – Durand

Synopsis: What inspires artists in their creations? To what extent is the history of their origins represented in their work? What is transmitted to their children?  This documentary aims to recount the creative power of artists of Armenian origin and to show the vitality of the transmission to their children, who have also become artists themselves.  A story of legacy through artistic creation, with the testimonies of great artists.

Bone Cage

Taylor Olson

Synopsis: Jamie (Taylor Olson) works a wood processor, clear-cutting for pulp in small-town Nova Scotia. At the end of each shift, he walks through the destruction he has created looking for injured animals and rescues those he can. Adapted from a play by Nova Scotian author Catherine Banks, Bone Cage is an impressive first feature from Halifax actor/filmmaker Taylor Olson that sensitively excavates the tragedy of how young people in rural communities, employed in the destruction of their environment, treat the people they love at the end of their shift.
